  • Painted A/C Unit with aluminum spray paint
  • Got Irena to paint the text on the nametag
  • Andy talking to PenPen
    May 14, 2004
  • Attached all the parts of the A/C unit together
  • May 13, 2004
  • I added stuffing to one leg. It's hard to tell from the picture since it's so blurry and weird, but it turned out really nice :)
  • Went to Walmart to buy more mattress foam.
  • Padded entire body! Maybe I'll add a little more padding to the rump after I finish everything else, not sure yet. I will be adding another layer on the white to disguise the egg-crate pattern from the foam. :)
  • Cut parts for A/C unit.
  • One leg stuffed

  • Made and attached second red feathers on PenPen's head. So pretty. It turned out to be much easier than I originally thought.
  • Repainted beak... it was WAAAAAY too orange. So I bought a few different colors and made a nice little mixture to tone it down. Much better.
  • Repainted beak

  • Back in action! After a long break (mostly doing school stuff and Irena's Shampoo dress, I am finally back to working on my beloved PenPen. I made a pattern for his red feathers on his head and quickly transferred that to the red furry felt that I bought and now one of them is attached!
  • Head w/ red feathers
    March 29, 2004
  • Attached eyes (w/ white surrounding fabric) and started to glue
  • Eye on head
    March 28, 2004
  • Made top beak... started as a test pattern and quickly turned into the final fabric. I made it out of white PVC vinyl (which will soon be painted), black fabric for the underside and then stuffed with a specially shaped piece of mattress foam. I love that stuff!
  • Just ran out to buy orange and black paint in the pouring rain.
  • Made bottom beak
  • Painted whole beak!! Soooo cute! Little too orange, but I guess I can decide to change that later.
  • Cut out final fabric of Pen Pen's head and sewed together
  • Pinned on beak and cut out hole to see
  • Top beak unpainted
    Feet and painted beak
    Beak on head
    March 26, 2004
  • Sewed second foot
  • Stuffed and attached all 12 claws on both the feet and wings.
  • Still need to attach the legs to the feet... sigh... I'm tired... zzzzzzz
  • Wearing Feet
    Body w/ feet + claws
    March 25, 2004
  • Made test pattern for feet, then cut out final grey PVC vinyl for one foot. Hope it works, I don't have much of the vinyl left.
  • Sewed one foot together (minus the 3 nails). To the right is a picture of it and my cat who thinks my vibrant pink tape measure is really, really neat.
  • Stuffed toes with cut up mattress foam.
  • Cut and sewed all 12 claws, but haven't attached yet.
  • Final Foot
    March 23, 2004
  • Pinned legs together and figured out how to attach them.
  • Made wings and pinned to body. Score! Next step? Sewing the whole body together. Then I'm on to making the head, but I want to make sure the body's done before visualizing that.
  • The body itself is now sewn together. I have the legs and wings pinned on and ready to sew, but now I'm going to start Irena's Shampoo Dress.
  • Final Body Sewn
    March 22, 2004
  • I bought the real penguin fabric today! I really hoped to buy this faux fur fabric I found (it's so beautiful, silky, and short enough for a penguin), however, I called every store within 30 miles of me and no one had it in black and white. My guess is they don't make it in those colors. ::sigh:: I settled for the stuff I used last year when I made Ein. It still looks good, and it's cheaper.
  • Shorty (my cat) helped me cut the penguin pieces out of the real fabric. However, while cutting out the fabric (which I had settled on), I discovered that I failed to remember Random Costuming Tip #8. Fortunately, I did follow Fabric Costuming Tip #2, so I have enough. :)
  • Pinned the body together... ahhh, it's beautiful. In the picture it's still inside out, but you get the idea. :)

    March 18, 2004
  • Measured and cut fabric for PenPen's back
  • Pinned the whole body together... it's starting to look like a penguin! Score! Can't wait 'til I figure out how to attach the legs.
  • Test Back

  • Cut out test fabric for legs and pinned together... looking pretty good, I think!
  • September 1, 2003
  • Went to Joann's and bought grey PVC vinyl for the feet. I wasn't going to cuz I haven't even made up a pattern for the feet yet but they had the perfect color and it was just enough so I decided to get it.
  • Also went to Walmart and pick up more test fabric. I had a bunch left from when I did Ein, but I needed more for Pen Pen and I also got some for my sister's wedding dress which I'm attempting to make ::crosses fingers:: Hopefully I'll be able to finish all this in time. :-)
  • Cut out pattern for chest of test fabric and thought about cutting out the legs, but haven't started. I decided to work on my sister's dress
  • August 29, 2003
  • Cut out life-size pieces of test fabric for Pen Pen's head and pinned together making adjustments as needed. I found out I actually came fairly close to getting it perfect. I have my 1/10 scale paper model to thank for that... Thanks scaled-down-paper-models of the world!!!
  • The test fabric penguin head should look familiar if you saw my Ein costume... I had so much of that test fabric left that Pen Pen's test pattern will be sufficiently supplied! You can never buy too much test fabric. :-)
  • Chuck the Cat helped me while I was working so I decided to include him in the photo. He's a stuffed animal, a cat, and also a fun game! ::chucks the cat:: Woohoo!
  • Made scaled paper patterns for legs
  • Test Head
    August 27, 2003
  • Did another intensive mental work study session while babysitting. Yet another double sided page of pink notes. I figured out how I will cut, sew, and pad the feet and air conditioning unit.
  • August 26, 2003
  • Did a lot of mental work while babysitting and drew up one double sided page of notes with pictures in pink pen so I'd remember all my ideas... I'm on fire! :-)
  • Hilary Duff's CD finally came out today so I picked it up... now, I'm sure you're wondering what that has to do with Pen Pen... well, it is what I'm going to be listening to throughout half of Pen Pen's construction so it's very important. :-) The other half is going to be filled with Dance Dance Revolution music. :-)
  • August 25, 2003
  • Drew a 1/10 scale diagram on graph paper of PenPen so I could get an idea of the proportions in real life.
  • Made test pattern at same scale ratio out of paper so I could see it in 3-D before transferring to real-life test fabric
  • Ordered green plastic animal eyes online from a Canadian based company... Chatsco Distributions [eye shown at right]
  • Sketch
